JONAH

Feeling the tension practically rolling off the two women, Jonah unfroze and hurried so he was ahead of Carol. “Let me take the lead, just to be on the safe side, okay?”

He expected Carol to protest that she was capable, but she glanced over her shoulder at Deb then sighed, allowing herself to fall back a step so that she was behind him. He turned his attention back to the clearing ahead of them, searching for any dangers.

He was glad Carol hadn’t argued; he was pretty sure she and Deb had already had words while they were clearing the door, and he did not want to be drawn into a situation where he had to pick sides—no thank you.

After several more cautious steps, the weak sunlight glinted off ice, and he couldn’t help the grin that stretched across his face. “Yes, it is a lake!”

He ignored the small huff of relief Deb made, knowing how she hated any sign of being weak. Not that he thought she was weak, but she thought they’d think less of her for being human or something, he didn’t know.

After one last glance to make sure there weren’t any creatures stirring besides themselves, he made his way over and crouched down at the shoreline, examining the area carefully to see if he could tell how thick the ice was.

Carol joined him, peeking excitedly over his shoulder. “I didn’t think that water would still be frozen, especially one this size. Is this normal for this time of year?”

Jonah pressed on the ice, humming approvingly when it didn’t give under his hand. “Lakes take longer to thaw, especially since they don’t have a current to keep the water moving like rivers or oceans. I’ve even seen some lakes with ice in late spring, if they’re in a shady location.”

Carol wrinkled her nose, but her eyes twinkled. “I didn’t know nature had shady locations, thought that was something that humans created.”

Deb huffed a quiet laugh, even as her gaze kept darting every which way, squinting against the brightness. Probably looking for Mike or the guards. “Shady as in shadowed, not as in sketchy, although I will admit that sometimes nature is downright creepy,” Deb said, a smile ghosting her lips.

Thinking back to the coyotes, Jonah couldn’t help but agree. The way their eyes glowed in the firelight and their slinking movements had freaked him out, and he was still uneasy whenever he remembered it. “Which is why we’re not trying to get to Florida—the swamps down there will get you, unlike this pretty little lake here that’s going to be our new best friend.”

Deb looked at him like he’d lost his mind. “It’s frozen. How are we supposed to fish in a frozen lake?”

He stood, surveying the frozen surface with a critical eye before nodding in satisfaction. “That’s easy, lots of people go ice fishing. I did it when I was younger with my da and granddad. Of course, we had a nice little hut right on the ice with a fire to keep us warm, but the concept is the same.
